We are looking forward to our 2018 meeting, to be held at the Red Lion Hotel in Olympia, WA on June 3-5, 2018. The WFE meetings bring together scholars and professionals to discuss topics related to forests and natural resources in the West. The conference has typically included a mix of research presentations, perspectives from both private and public sector and, most importantly, treasured opportunities to network with likeminded professional and scholarly colleagues.

Lodging Reservations

Lodging is available at the Red Lion Olympia by calling 800-733-5466 and mentioning Western Forest Economists.  Single or double rooms are $119 plus tax.  After May 3 rooms are subject to availability.


The registration fee is $325 if received by May 28 or $375 if received after May 28.  The fee for students or retired attendees is $160 before May 28 or $195 after May 28. Checks should be made payable to Western Forestry and Conservation Association.  Purchase orders, VISA/MasterCard, and American Express are accepted. Tax id # 930-331-712. Abstract submission now closed: We invite existing and new members to submit abstracts for presentations, special sessions, and posters. Proposals should be a maximum of 1-page in length. Submit proposals to Gareth Waugh at gwaugh@portblakely.com by March 16. We will make every effort to include as many proposals in the program as possible. Three types of submissions will be considered:

1) Submit an abstract for an oral presentation

Oral presentations are typically 15-20 minutes, with sessions organized around common themes. Presentations on new or emerging research, case studies, industry analyses, or economic updates are welcome. Potential topics of interest may include (but are not limited to):

  • Forest products trade
  • Wildland fire economics and management
  • Finance and investment
  • Bioenergy
  • Ecosystem services (e.g., water quality and supply, carbon sequestration, recreation)
  • Climate change and policy
  • Innovations in technology and modeling
  • Federal or State land management  We invite the development and submission of organized special sessions.

Submissions should include your presentation title, presenter name(s) and an abstract.

2) Organize a special session

We invite the development and submission of organized special sessions. Organized sessions could take the form of a discussion panel on a given topic, or a group of presentations on a common theme. Submissions should include a proposed session title, abstract, and the names of proposed presenter’s/panel members who have agreed to participate. Presenters may also submit 5 minute talks from those who are working on a topic and wish to use the question time for input and advice from the audience.

 3) Submit a poster abstract

We encourage the submission of posters to take part in a poster session. Poster submissions should include the poster title, author name(s) and a brief abstract.
