2011 National Tree Farmers of the Year

Outstanding Tree Farmers of the YearSteve and Janet Funk, Northern Idaho forest landowners awarded 2011 National Tree Farmers of the year.  In the 1970’s the Funks began accumulating their 375 acre Edge Creek Tree Farm. Their dedication to responsible management, forest restoration and environmental education were keys to the successful transformation of the property on Wolf Lodge Creek into an outstanding example of successful forest land management. Steve has been heard to say “We believe that sustainably managing a healthy forest can only enhance its natural beauty and function. Enjoying the magnificence of the scenery is not only pleasurable to the eye, but also refreshes one’s soul.”

A Unique effort: Reforesting with Sugar Pine

Father and son with sugar pineThe Sugar Pine Foundation (SPF) is a non-profit organization based in South Lake Tahoe and dedicated to restoring sugar pines which have been decimated by historic logging, fire suppression and white pine blister rust.  SPF identifies seed trees resistant to blister rust and works with partners and volunteers to plant their progeny in forested areas thinned by natural events or human activities. SPF plants about 15,000 sugar pine seedlings annually and also sells seedlings  and seeds to homeowners and in bulk quantities to land-owners for their planting and reforestation efforts.
